Celery Art
Yes, you read it right. We did an art project using celery!
God is such a creative God...He even created the stem portion of celery stalks to look beautiful...like roses:) So I cut off the celery, only leaving about 5 inches of the bunch.
Then we simply dipped the ends into red paint, and stamped away. Simple and beautiful.

We can't wait to show you the end result!! I think it will definitely be fridge-worthy.

Science ATTRACTION!
I have GOT to remember to bring in my camera to take some photos of your ADORABLE kids! You should have seen them yesterday when they were in their science groups. We were learning about magnets repelling and attracting, so they got to try and determine which items on the table attract. Paper clips, fuzzy balls, nails, plastic toys, other magnets, etc. were enthusiastically experimented with:)
It was such a joy to watch all of them working together, laughing and giggling, and learning all at the same time.
My class is an absolute blessing!!

Technology in the Classroom!
Today was our first computer class with Miss Osinski. I am so excited about what the kids will be learning this year. She will start them off every day with typing skills! Not only that, she will teach the class all about using Word. My goodness...these kids will be ready to do online research and type up their reports by the time they get to middle school...or even sooner!!
I am thankful that she will also focus on the theme of "responsibility" regarding the use of the internet. She will be sure to teach your kids regarding the dangers of surfing the web without supervision. We will also learn how we can honor the Lord through this useful tool.
In math class, we used technology to learn more about doubles facts. Today in social studies, we learned about the 7 continents and the animals that belong to those continents using Powerpoint.
We are off to a great start using technology in the classroom!

Sweeeeet first half-day!!
I would like for all the moms, dads, and grandparents to know that your 2nd grader had a sweeeeet first half-day of school!!
We had a great time getting to know each other by using the "Little Bit About Me Bag". I even had a bag to share:) The class learned that I LOVE cats and have a white kitty named Frixie. I also showed off my family picture of my husband Jeff, my son Zack (8th grade), and my daughter Ellie (5th grade). Finally, I showed my candy from Japan, and shared with the class that I was born there and moved to the United States when I was in 2nd grade!
We also learned how to "Read to Self", and practiced where to sit, and how to read quietly. I was VERY proud of everyone.
Before dismissal time, we looked over our first set of spelling words...super easy! But I told the kids not to worry...I will be adding on 5 CHALLENGE words next week to keep their brains learning:)
Don't forget that tomorrow night is our Back to School Night at 7pm! (PARENTS ONLY) Looking foward to seeing all of you in the classroom.
Blessings,
Mrs. Johnston

Dear Smartie boys and Smartie girls (and their wonderful parents),
Welcome to the new school year! I'm Mrs. Johnston, and I am thrilled to be your teacher this year.
I know that it's hard to say good-bye to the lazy days of summer and get back into setting your alarm clocks to a VERY early time in the morning. But I want you to know that I am looking forward to seeing all of you in my classroom. We are going to have a SUPER DUPER year together!!
Don't forget to come to the classroom on Tuesday, 8/28, for Open House (10am-noon). It will be a SWEET time!! Be sure to bring all your supplies that morning so you don't have to carry everything on the first day of school.
See you soon!
